In a remarkable achievement for Kenyan football, three of the nation's referees have been selected to officiate at the prestigious Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023, slated to take place in Morocco.

The inclusion of these referees in the continental tournament's officiating team is a testament to the progress Kenya has made in the realm of football refereeing.

Among the selected officials are Gilbert Cheruiyot, Peter Waweru, and Mary Njoroge, whose names appear on the official list of referees and assistant referees for the tournament.

This selection is a significant milestone, as it reflects the quality and high standards that Kenyan referees have achieved on the international stage.

Gilbert Cheruiyot, an experienced match official, has consistently demonstrated his expertise in the Kenyan Premier League and has previously officiated international matches, showing remarkable consistency and fairness in his decision-making.

His leadership on the pitch has earned him a place at Africa's top footballing event.

Peter Waweru, another seasoned referee, is known for his sharp judgement and control over the game. His ability to handle high-pressure situations with calmness and precision has been lauded by players and coaches alike. Waweru's dedication to the sport and his role has seen him rise through the ranks to earn this prestigious opportunity.

Mary Njoroge rounds out the trio, marking a significant step for female referees in a predominantly male-dominated field. Her selection as an assistant referee is not just a personal triumph but also a beacon of inspiration for aspiring female referees across the continent.

Njoroge's performance in previous regional and international fixtures has broken barriers and paved the way for more women to be involved at the highest levels of football officiating.

The inclusion of these three Kenyan referees in AFCON 2023 is a clear indicator of the country's ongoing commitment to excellence in football refereeing.

It serves as a recognition of the rigorous training, performance, and integrity that the officials have displayed.

Their presence on the international stage will not only bring a sense of pride to the nation but also inspire the next generation of Kenyan referees to aim for the highest standards in the beautiful game.
