President William Ruto on Sunday gifted Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards Sh1 million each after attending the Mashemeji Derby played at a fully packed Nyayo Stadium.

Maxwel Otieno scored a first half winner as AFC Leopards slowed down Gor Mahia's title charge after defeating the record Kenyan champions 2-1 in the 96th Mashemeji Derby.

The crucial FKF Premier League match played in front of club patron Raila Odinga and President Ruto attracted thousands of fans who went home after 90 minute of pure entertainment from players of both teams.

President Ruto promised to change the football standards in the country as he awarded both teams Sh1 million.

"I promised you we will change the game and I have agreed with Ababu to ensure we restore our lost glory in Football.

"Having watched a good Mashemeji derby, I will give each team Sh1 million. We are officially submitting our co-joint AFCON bid on Wednesday and we are optimistic of winning the hosting rights," President William Rutto, said after speaking to Gor and AFC players at Nyayo Stadium.

Victor Omune gave Ingwe the lead in the 33rd minute from the penalty spot before Austin Odhiambo restored parity in the 39th minute.

Maxwell Otieno restored Leopards' advantage two minute to the break to lead 2-1.

Gor remain second after the defeat. For Ingwe, this was their first win over Gor in seven years.

Tusker on Saturday leapfrogged Gor to top the 18-team standings after narrowly edging out Kariobangi Sharks 1-0. The brewers lead on 64 points, one ahead of Gor Mahia.
