Mathare United continued with their revival push on Wednesday after shocking record champions Gor Mahia 2-1 in a rescheduled Football Kenya Premier (FKF) League match played at Kasarani Stadium.

Daniel Otieno's winner in the 82nd minute saw the Slum Boys end K'Ogalo's 11-match unbeaten streak as they moved further away from the relegation zone.

The 2008 champions took an eighth minute lead through Douglas Kibet before Benson Omalla scored his 17th goal of the season when he leveled the scores at 1-1 in 64th minute.

The win saw Mathare retain their position 15 but with 16 points, four points further away from the relegation zone.

On the other hand, Gor's title charge was slowed but they remain top on 37 points, four points ahead of second placed Nzoia Sugar.

Speaking after the win, Mathare head coach Sam Koko said belief, determination and hard work propelled through to victory.

"Today our tactical game plan worked very well for us. I am very pleased with how the boys believed in themselves even after Gor leveled the scores.

"This win is big for us. It is more than a win since we are telling the sponsors to come on board because we have a team that can fight and play with the best despite the challenges," said Koko.

This is Mathare's first win over Gor since 2019.

Elsewhere, FC Talanta saw off Vihiga Bullets 2-1 as Kariobangi Sharks thrashed bottom placed Wazito 3-1 in Kisumu.
