Coast teams begin battle for nationals tickets

Mwavumbo Secondary School from Kwale County are beaming with confidence ahead of their clash with former champions Mombasa's Tononoka School as Coast region secondary school Term Two games begin today (September 2, 2022).
The two-day games will be held at Shanzu Teachers Training College and Shimo La Tewa High School.
The Kwale team that caused upsets during the county games last weekend, faces an acid test when they take on Tononoka in boys' football.
They are in pool A that also has Kenyatta Mwatate of Taita Taveta and Kilifi's newcomers Katana Ngala School who replaced Mjanaheri, who won the Kilifi County title, but were disqualified for fielding an ineligible player.
Former national and East Africa secondary schools girls' football champions St John's of Kilifi play Mwasere from Taita Taveta and later face Kaa Chonjo of Mombasa and Mazeras Girls of Kwale.

Another focus will be in boys' basketball were a star-studded Dr Aggrey School from Taita Taveta will clash with Kaya Tiwi of Kwale in a pool B match. The pool also has Mombasa's Tudor Day.
Pool A has Shimo La Tewa, Kilifi's Gede, Baptist of Mombasa and Mpeketoni from Lamu.
Girls basketball will see former national champions Kaya Tiwi return to face Mwasere of Taita Taveta in the opening match before playing Aga Khan Academy, Mombasa and Wiyoni from Lamu in pool A matches. Pool B has Mama Ngina of Mombasa, Kilifi's Chanagande and Vigurungani of Kwale.
Meanwhile, reigning national girls volleyball champions Kwanthanze Secondary School, from Machakos, rose to the occasion as Eastern region Term Two school games began Thursday at Kangaru School and Embu University.
Coached by Justin Kigwani, Kwanthanze proved they are ready to defend both national and East Africa secondary school titles after they defeated Ilika from Kitui County 3-0 (27-25, 25-7, 25-5).
Enjoying the services of attackers Magdaline Nzembi and hitter Kenzia Chepchumba, the champions were in a class of their own.
"We have prepared well and our focus is to retain all titles we won in 2019 before the games took a break in 2020 and last year due to Covid-19 pandemic," said Kigwari.
The champions are in pool B alongside Ilika (Kitui), Ngunyumu (Embu) and Kyeni girls of Embu.
Pool A has Nkondi (Tharaka Nithi), Ntumba (Meru), Kambimawe(Makueni) and Moi girls from Marsabit.
In boys' volleyball, Matilitu School from Makueni sent an early on day one after defeating Dr. Charles School from Machakos County 3-0 (25-9, 26-24, 25-16).
