Reigning African beach volleyball champions Gaudencia Makokha and Brackcides Agala are expected to leave today for the World championships, which will be held from June 10-19 in Rome, Italy.

The team will, however, leave without their coach Salome Wanjala, who is in Mombasa to train other team members in readiness for next month’s Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, United Kingdom.

Patrick Owino, who is the men’s beach volleyball coach, has been tasked with the role of travelling with the duo to Rome for the championships.

Wanjala will team up with coach Sammy Mulinge as they handle the Commonwealth Games team that is expected in Mombasa today.

Makokha has been training in Mombasa under coach Wanjala while the rest of the members where in Kelibia, Tunisia for the African women’s volleyball club championships that concluded last week, where KCB Bank won.

Wanjala said other members of the beach team where actively involved in the continental event and could not travel to Mombasa for the camp.

“Makokha left for Nairobi today (yesterday) to join Agala for the Rome tourney. The duo has previously played together and there is no cause for alarm as preparations are concerned,” said Wanjala.

Wanjala said Naomi Too, Veronica Adhiambo, Yvonne Wavinya and Phosca Kasisi are set to join the Mombasa camp as they prepare for the Commonwealth Games.

She added that the team will be training in Mombasa.
