Kasagam Mixed Secondary School are the football champions of the inaugural Commonwealth College sports tournament.

Kasagam defeated hosts Lions High School 2-1 in the finals of the men’s football played at the institution's grounds in Kisumu.

Kasagam won a cash prize of Sh14,000 as they continue with their preparations for the Kenya Secondary School Games set to resume in April after two years suspension due to covid-19.

All school games were suspended by the Ministry of Education since March 2019 but have since been lifted with students allowed to actively resume competitive sports starting this year after the national examinations.

Rovin Genga scored a goal apiece in both halves to guide Kasagam to victory, a win the Form Three student said will go a long way to motivate the school team ahead of the Kisumu West Sub-county school games set to kick off at the beginning of next term.

“I am happy to score. It has been a long time out not playing football. I love playing football just as academics is important and to thrive in both is key because the future is bright in both. To win our first tournament is a good sign we are a strong team heading into school games,” said Genga.

Lions High who finished runners up were given Sh7000. In the third-place playoffs, Rotary College defeated Kirembe Mixed 2-0 to win a cash award of Sh4000.

Six teams turned out for the two-day tournament played over the weekend including Kikao FC, Kasagam Mixed, Kirembe Mixed, Rotary College, Lions and Commonwealth College of Medical and Related Studies.

Elsewhere, Lion's high netball team were crowned champions after finishing top with six points in the round-robin matches.

Lions won all their matches against Kirembe and Commonwealth College to finish top and win a trophy and Sh8000 prize money.

Kirembe finished second with three points as Commonwealth came third.

Sponsored by Commonwealth College, the tournament’s main objective was to nurture sports talents in schools and revive sports again after two years of absence.
