Likoni FC edged Changamwe FC 5-4 on post match penalties to win the Coast edition of the ongoing Boda Boda Football Cup.

The winner was decided on penalties after the match ended 1-1 in regular time at Babla Grounds in Ukunda, Kwale County on Sunday.

Likoni were awarded Sh50,000 for the feat while Changamwe went home Sh30,000 richer.

Ukunda FC and Pongwe FC who tied in third place got Sh10,000 each. The competition attracted 16 teams from Mombasa, Kwale and Kilifi counties.

Kwale County Deputy Governor Fatuma Achani and the County’s Cabinet Secretary for Sports, Ramadhan Bungale, graced the occasion.

“We are happy to support this tournament that seeks to nurture talent among our Boda Boda (motorcycle) operators,”Bungale said. “We are grateful for the support being extended by various corporates to help talented youths in the coast to realise their potential in sports,” he added.

The Coast edition followed the opening leg in Nairobi held at Jacaranda Grounds a few weeks ago.

“We will traverse all regions of Kenya, top two finalists from each zone will qualify for the national finals whose prize money will be Sh1M,” tournament organiser Nelly Oaks said.

The series aims to promote road safety among the Boda Boda riders.

It also encourages the operators to seek behaviour change for better perception by members of the public.

Boda Boda Safety Association of Kenya (BAK) chairman, Kevin Mubadi believes the tournament will help to transform them.
