Ulinzi Starlets edged Vihiga Queens 2-1 to lift the inaugural FKF Women’s Cup at Nakuru Showgrounds yesterday.

Ulinzi Starlets coach Joseph Mwanza couldnt hide his delight at winning their first title.

“It was not an easy final, bearing in mind we were playing against Vihiga who are CECAFA Champions. This is a big motivation for the girls,” said Mwanza.

It’s a first time we are participating in the league but I’m happy we have at least won a trophy at the end of the season.”

Lucy Mukhwana broke the deadlock for Ulinzi Starlets in the 7th minute with her low shot after beating Vihiga goalkeeper Lilian Awuor on a one-on-one situation.

Vihiga Queens piled pressure on Ulinzi defence searching for an equaliser but soldiers held their nerves to go into the break leading 1-0.

But the recently crowned CECAFA Regional Qualifiers champions capitalised on goalkeeper Maureen Shimuli’s blunder to draw level in the 64th minute.

However, Ulinzi regained the lead ten minutes later through Christine Nekesa’s goal after pouncing on a rebound from a freekick. Just like in the first half, the three time Kenya Women’s Premier League champions put pressure on the soldiers’ backline, but their efforts were thwarted by a solid Ulinzi defence.

Meanwhile, Bunyore Starlets were crowned the FKF Women Division One champions after beating  Kangemi AllStarlets 3-2 on post-match penalties yesterday. The match ended 2-2 in regular time.

Ulinzi Starlets walked away with Sh350,000 for winning the FKF Women’s Cup, while Vihiga Queens pocketed Sh150,000.

Bunyore Starlets and Kangemi AllStarlets received Sh100,000 each.
