Tottenham have announced the transfer of Belgian defender Toby Alderweireld to Qatar-based side Al-Duhail SC.

The 32-year-old has been at Spurs for the last six years, after joining them in 2015 from Atletico Madrid.

He was part of the squad that took Spurs to their first-ever Champions League final in the 2015/16 season, as well as the team that held the best defensive record in a single Premier League campaign (26 goals conceded) in the 2016/17 season.

Alderweireld made 236 appearances during his time at White Hart Lane and the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

He boasts 113 caps for Belgium and has played in the 2014 and 2018 World Cups, 2016 and 2020 European Championships.

Kenyans fans will be happy to see Alderweireld share a dressing room with one of their own, Michael Olunga, who joined Al-Duhail in January.

Kashiwa Reysol reportedly accepted a bid of about seven million Euros (Approximately Sh933 million) from Duhail for 26-year-old Olunga, who finished J-League top-scorer with 28 goals in 32 appearances, earning a historic golden boot, the first ever to be won by an African.

The club also acquired the services of Tunisian international midfielder Ferjani Sassi after the end of his contract with Zamalek.

Al Duhail are seven-time Qatar champions and are currently coached by Frenchman Sabri Lamouchi. They were champions in the seasons 2010–11, 2011–12, 2013–14, 2014–15, 2016–17, 2017–18 and 2019–20).

Al Duhail have also won the Qatar Cup three times (2013, 2015 and 2018).
