Rangers keeper Opiyo now eyes Stars slot after winning award

Posta Rangers goalkeeper Kelvin Opiyo has sent a come-get-me call to Harambee Stars head Coach Jacob ‘Ghost’ Mulee after he beat a strong pool of competitors for the FKF Player of the month award for March.
He beat Brazilian Wilson Silva of Gor Mahia and Zoo FC midfielder Alex Onchwari to become the third goalkeeper to have won the award that comes with a Sh50,000 cash prize.
Interestingly, Opiyo was the third choice keeper for Posta and was thrown into the deep end in March after the first and second choice keepers picked injuries.
But he nonetheless produced exemplary performance by keeping three clean sheets that helped Rangers pick seven of a possible nine points.
With awards coming in, Rangers are now looking forward for even a stronger comeback upon resumption of the league with the recently appointed coach Stanley Okumbi acknowledging the team’s improved performance that also saw him bag the Coach of the Month award.

Opiyo believes that his side, that sits deeps in 14th place out of a 16-club league, can still finish in a respectable position should the FKF Premier League resume. The season was halted exactly one month following the order from President Uhuru Kenyatta to
“It is a dream of every player to be called to the national team. I would want to help my team to finish at least in the top five and possibly get a call up to the national team,” Opiyo told Standard Sports after receiving his ever individual in his entire career.
“I have never won any award since I joined the league. The bar has been set high but I’m ready for the challenge,” said Opiyo who was oustanding against Kariobangi Sharks, Gor Mahia and Mathare United.
Opiyo joined Rangers from the National Super League (NSL) side APS Bomet in September last year.
