Liverpool legend dies aged 82

The Reds great made 425 appearances for the Anfield giants between 1961 and 1971, plundering 118 goals.

He scored one of the most iconic goals in Liverpool's history as he netted the winner in extra time to secure their first ever FA Cup triumph against Leeds in 1965.

St John was a key part of the side under Bill Shankly which won league titles in 1964 and 1966.

He helped fire the Reds to promotion to the the first division in his first season on Merseyside after joining for a then club-record fee of £37,500 from Motherwell.

St John had a successful career as a pundit following his retirement, striking up a partnership with fellow ex-pro Jimmy Greaves on their popular Saint and Greavsie programme.

He passed away on Monday evening following illness.

In a statement, his family said: "It is with a heavy heart that we have to inform you that after a long illness we have lost a husband, father and grandfather.

“He passed away peacefully with his family at his bedside.

“We would like to thank all the staff at Arrowe Park Hospital for their hard work and dedication during these very difficult times.

“The family would be grateful for privacy at this extremely sad time.”

After leaving Liverpool, St John would go on to play for Hellenic in South Africa and had further spells in English football with Coventry and Tranmere.

The 21-cap Scotland international managed Motherwell and Portsmouth after his retirement from playing in 1973.

He had spells as assistant manager at Sheffield Wednesday and Coventry.

After leaving Hillsborough in 1979, he went on to become a pundit and soon after joined Greaves on their show, which ran until 1992.
