Former Argentina goalkeeper Pablo Cavallero has been charged with manslaughter after his involvement in a car crash.

A 57-year-old local, Juan Rivero, was hit by a car on Route 2 near Etcheverry in Argentina.

The man died at the scene despite ambulances being called from a nearby tollbooth on the motorway.

Police confiscated Cavallero's Volkswagen Tiguan pending an investigation into the car crash.

But reports in Argentina claim Cavallero has been charged with manslaughter for his part in the incident.

The 46-year-old is now sporting director at Argentine top-flight side Velez Sarsfield.

Cavallero was been travelling back from Velez's 2-0 win at Argentinos Juniors according to the report.

Cavallero went on to win 26 caps for his country and also helped them claim the silver medal at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta.

The goalkeeper began his playing career at Velez Sarsfield in 1995 where he played for four years before moving to Spanish side Espanyol.

He won the Copa del Rey with the La Liga outfit in 2000.

Cavallero also played for Celta Vigo and Levante, reached the last 16 of the Champions League with the former in 2004.

He also won the Intertoto Cup with Celta in 2000.

In 2008 the shot-stopper returned to South America in 2008 when he signed for Uruguayan side Penarol.

He played for a further season before returning.
