Eden Hazard suffers thigh injury, doubt for Atalanta UCL clash

Real Madrid forward Eden Hazard is a big doubt for Los Blancos’ Champions League clash against Atalanta following news of a new thigh injury. 

Madrid announced on Wednesday, February 3 the player’s recovery would continue to be assessed, though reports suggest the Belgian could be sidelined for between four and six weeks.

“Following tests carried out today on our player, Eden Hazard, by Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a muscle injury in the rectus femoris of his left leg. His recovery will continue to be assessed,” read a statement on the club’s website.

Hazard, 30, is ruled out of Saturday's La Liga clash against Huesca and next week’s midweek Tuesday's home game against Getafe. He is now a big doubt to face Atalanta in the Champions League last-16 first leg in Italy February 24 and the derby against to league leaders Atletico Madrid next month.

Hazard has had his career at Real Madrid upset by two ankle injuries and has been out of the squad three separate times this season. He joined the Spanish champions from Chelsea for a club-record 100 million euros in 2019. 

Hazard was absent for two weeks in November after testing positive for Covid-19, after six weeks on the sidelines due to an ankle injury. 

After recovering from Covid-19, he made a return got a hamstring injury that kept him out for another six weeks. He had to wait until January 9 for his next start.

Hazard has made 6 La Liga starts this season and has only completed one full league match.
