Atletico Madrid superstar João Félix tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday, the Spanish club confirmed.

Felix is isolating at home, in compliance with the health authorities’ guidelines and LaLiga protocols.

“João Félix has tested positive for COVID-19. The striker is isolating at home, in compliance with the health authorities’ guidelines and LaLiga protocols,” Atletico said in a statement.

The Portuguese, who cost Atletico a club record 126 million euros (Sh17 billion) in 2019, is set to miss Monday's game at home to Celta Vigo along with defender Mario Hermoso and winger Yannick Carrasco, who each tested positive last week.

Atletico hold a 10-point lead at the top of the standings with a game in hand.

Luis Suarez fired in two goals as a clinical Atletico thrashed Cadiz 4-2 away in an action-packed game on Sunday.

Suarez gave Atletico the lead in the 28th minute with a curling free-kick which was cancelled out by Cadiz forward Alvaro Negredo seven minutes later before Saul Niguez restored the visitors' advantage moments before the break.

Cadiz had a strong penalty claim turned down on the stroke of halftime when Atletico's Koke blocked the ball with his hand while on the ground but Atleti got a spot-kick just after the break which Suarez converted for his 14th goal of the season.

The Uruguayan has scored five times in his last three appearances and has an average of a goal for every league start he has made.
