Brazilian defender David Luiz could see his Arsenal stint cut short.

The 33-year-old is out of contract next month and the club have shown no signs of extension negotiations.

Luiz was signed from Chelsea on in August on Transfer Deadline Day for 8 million pounds, replacing Frenchman and club captain Laurent Koscielny, who had made the move to Bordeaux a day before.

Though it was understood Luiz joined Arsenal on a two-year-deal, Sky Sports clarified the Brazilian had been contracted at the Gunners for an initial 12 months.

Luiz had been fairly impressive to new Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta, starting 14 of the 15 managed by him.

Luiz hinted on a possible return to his former club Benfica, revealing to Brazil’s SporTV he would love to finish his career in Portugal.

"I love Benfica. My dream is to step on the pitch of Estadio da Luz in their colours," said Luiz.

David Ornstein, usually a source in England on Arsenal matters, said the club could also dispense of the services of defenders Rob Holding, Shkodran Mustafi and Sokratis Papastathopoulos.

“Arsenal have a vast number of central defenders and presumably they’ll need to get rid of some this summer. We know that some of them, including Rob Holding, Sokratis and maybe Shkodran Mustafi as well, Arsenal will listen to offers for,” said Ornstein on The Ornstein and Chapman Podcast.
