Cristiano Ronaldo fans savagely trolled Lionel Messi for not scoring or assisting against Napoli in the UEFA Champions League match last night.

The Ronaldo camp now claims Messi (Barcelona) bottled in the huge match after shining against minnows, Eibar, on Saturday scoring four goals past Marko Dmitrovic.

Messi had not scored in his previous four games but dribbled past defenders in the 4-0 demolition at the Camp Nou.

Fans were quick to compare the number of goals that Messi and Ronaldo have scored during UCL knock out stages.

According to UEFA, Cr7 (Juventus) has scored 65 goals, Messi has netted 41 goals and Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski is a distant third with 21 goals in the competition.

Antoine Griezmann became the first Barcelona player other than Messi to score in a Champions League away knock out goal since Neymar Junior against Germany’s Bayern Munich in 2015.

Needless to say, Messi was kept quiet by Napoli defenders sending social media into overdrive.

Quique Setien's side were flat in first half and deservedly went behind to Dries Mertens' superb strike after 30 minutes at the Stadio San Paolo.

Napoli lost Mertens after suffering a bruised ankle early in the second half and their advantage was erased before the hour mark when Griezmann, who had previously cut an isolated figure in attack, thundered home after a glorious assist from Nelson Semedo.

Fans troll messages:

"Another huge DISASTER CLASS by Mr Bottler himself, Messi Again and again and again and again choking out in KO stage and saved by his teammates. Terrible performance. No surprise,” one social media user wrote.

A second Tweeted: “Messi easily is the most overrated player of all time. Every Messi fanacted like Messi won his 8th Ballob d’Or after Eibar’s game. Now watch all of them going silent after this disasterclass by Messi in big games.”

A third added: "Most goals in Champions League Knockout games:

Ronaldo = 65 goals

2+3: Messi + Lewandowski = 62 goals

Greatest big game player in football history.”

“Their goat still disappeared as he always does even with Koulibaly’s absence! No worry, he will be available against the mighty Leganes.!!! Better thank your Griezmann,” another wrote.

A fifth tweeted: “Serie A teams playing 11 man defence! My admiration goes to Cristiano for scoring week in week out ???? it means a lot coming from Barcelona fan.????”

On Wednesday, Lyon host Ronaldo and the Italian giants in the first leg of their last-16 tie.

Lyon are massive underdogs against a Juventus side in a hurry for Champions League success given the massive investment they made in Ronaldo, who recently turned 35.

In another cracker match, Real Madrid host Manchester City at the Santiago Bernabeu tonight. Both UCL clashes start from11pm EAT.
