Schools: Kisumu Boys shine during county championships

Kisumu Boys and Kisumu Girls High School are the soccer and hockey champions of the 2020 Kisumu Open invitational school tournament.

Nyang'ori High School from Vihiga County also won their handball boy’s handball title by dethroning defending champions Kisumu Boys as Kakamega's Namasoli Secondary bagged girls handball title.

Chesamisi High School from Bungoma took home the boy's hockey title as Masogo Mixed won in the girls's soccer category.

Agoro Sare and Tigoi Girls defended their boys' and girls’ basketball tittles respectively in the tournament that took place over the weekend in Kisumu.

Sigalame High School from Busia were crowned new basketball champions as St. Jospeh Kisumu and Kisumu Girls bagged the boys’ and girls’ volleyball titles respectively.

In soccer, Kisumu Boys emerged soccer boys’ champions through mere luck of the toss of the coin after playing out to a 3-3 draw against Magadi as Masogo Mixed defeated Magadi 1-0 to win in the girls’ category.

"The boys played well in the tournamnet and am glad they won. This victory will be crucial toward building the team spirit ahead of the upcoming term one and two school games," Kisumu Boys coach Maurice Abila.

In basketball, last year national finalists Sigalame High thrashed Chesamis 42 - 19 in the finals to dethrone defending champions Kisumu Boys who were knocked out in the quarters.

Nyangori High also shocked Kisumu Boys after narrowly edging them 10-9 in the boys’ handball final as Kisumu Girls bagged two titles after defeating Rae Girls in both volleyball and hockey finals.

Elsewhere, Koyonzo Boys from Kakamega scooped both the Maseno Amadi Open 7s and 15s trophy in the tournament held at Maseno Grounds.

Koyonzo narrowly edged out hosts Maseno School 6-0 in the final courtesy of Emmanuel Oketch's two penalties before bagging their second trophy in the 7s final where they defeated 2019 Western Region finalists Vihiga High by 7-0.

The victory leaves the side as one of the favorites heading to the Kenya Secondary School games having also performed impressively last year by reaching 2019 Western Region 15s final and the Prescott Cup final where on both occasions they lost to East African champions Kakamega High.
