Rangers beat Thika United as Sofapaka pile more woes on Nakumatt.

Gor Mahia moved back to the top of the Kenyan Premier League table with a narrow 1-0 win over newcomers Vihiga United, in yesterday’s match at Moi Stadium, Kisumu.

Jacques Tuyisenge’s 57th minute effort saw the 16-time champions take their points tally to 19 and leapfrog Mathare United at the summit.

Mathare United had temporarily taken the league’s leadership on Friday following a 1-0 win against Chemelil Sugar in Machakos.

Though slim, the victory will go along way to motivate Dylan Kerr’s side ahead of next week’s Confederations Cup first leg match against visiting SuperSport from South Africa.

Kerr said: “Vihiga United is a good side and they gave us a good game.

“We had many opportunities that we never utilised, we could have won by about four goals.”

Haron Shakava’s shot in the ninth minute showed Gor Mahia had the hunger to hit back with a bang after going out of the Champions League following a disappointing 1-0 aggregate loss to Tunisia Esperance.

It was the same scoreline at Bukhungu Stadium where Wycliffe Opondo inspired Kakamega Homeboyz to a crucial win over Bandari.

In Machakos, high flying Sofapaka piled more misery on cash-strapped Nakumatt after beating them 2-0 as Kennedy Otieno returned to haunt his former club, scoring a brace in Posta Rangers’ 3-1 win over Thika United at Camp Toyoyo.

Eugene Ambulwa made work easier for Batoto Ba Mungu, heading Rodgers Aloro’s free kick into his own net in the third minute.
