David de Gea wins player of the year

David de Gea was named Manchester United's player of the season for a third successive year at the club's awards night on Monday.

The goalkeeper, who came close to leaving United for Real Madrid last summer, took home the top prize at a star-studded ceremony at Old Trafford in recognition for another stellar season.

"It’s difficult to say something," said De Gea.

"To win three years in a row is amazing, I’m really happy.

"It’s an honour and I want to say thank you to every, I think we have some of the best fans in the world - thank you to everyone."

Manager Louis van Gaal paid tribute to the Spain international, insisting the Old Trafford No 1 full deserved to win the top gong.

"Everyone knows he was invited to Madrid," said Van Gaal.

"His girlfriend is living in Madrid, his parents, Spanish, Real Madrid is a great club but he is still here and as a manager I am so happy he is here and he deserves to win this title."

Defender Chris Smalling , meanwhile, was voted the club's players' of the year by his fellow Red Devils stars.

The centre-half has been a standout performer throughout the campaign for United and got the votes of his teammates at their star studded end of season awards.

He has established himself as a key part of United's defence as they look to break into the top four and qualify for Champions League football next season.

Also at the evening, Marcus Rashford was voted as the club's Under-18 player of the year, while Cameron Borthwick-Jackson won the U21 award.

Rashford has broken into the first team in the second half of the campaign, netting seven times in 15 appearances in all competitions.

"It’s been a bit crazy, it’s difficult to take in," the youngster said. “It worked in my favour because I wasn’t thinking about the game too much, so I didn’t have to think about it.

“It means a lot. I’m Manchester born. It’s what dreams are made of.

“It’s important I have to thank all my coaching staff, Nicky Butt, Warren Joyce, and my family.”
