Top 8 Cup: Gor Mahia beat Sony Sugar in extra time to clinch another trophy

Gor Mahia are on course for a treble after adding the Top 8 cup on top of the SportPesa Premier League title already in their cabinet. They won the Cup in a tightly-contested match against Sony Sugar at Moi Stadium Kisumu, yesterday.
The mighty K'Ogalo continued their winning streak and defended their unbeaten run despite meeting a highly defensive and impressive Sony Sugar. The third silverware remaining for them to wrap up a highly successful season is the GOtv Shield in which they are in the quarterfinal stage.
The winning goal came from Meddie Kagere who scored from the spot in the 117th minute  after a 1-1 regulation time draw.
The premier league champions have enjoyed fine form all season. However, they had to wait until the 75th minute when Kagere headed home a well taken ball by Ali Abondo to level.
Gor talisman Michael Olunga, who has been impressive with seven goals in five games missed several opportunities.
He failed to connect a well-taken throw-in by Enock Agwanda after his compatriot Kagere failed to tap in a fine pass from Zigimana from close range.
The sugar millers came into the game as underdogs, the match being their first Top 8 final against K'ogallo who qualified for the final for a second time.
The Awendo-based side, however, put up a brave fight against the champions. They defended their 1-0 lead in a well-organized highly-defensive display.
Sony posed a huge threat to the home side on the counter with Robert Omunuk and Justin Monda's pace causing opponents problems.
Coach Salim Babu called on Alfred Onyango to lead the defence while upfront, he deployed Ugandan Andrew Ssekayombya, who scored their only goal in the 12th minute.
Gor had a strong start, with Kagere's shot after 10 minutes blocked by Sony custodian Alan Owiny. Gor goalkeeper Boniface Oluoch rested most part of the first half except for the goal by the Ugandan at the 12th minute.
Olunga missed an important chance in the 39th minute when he blasted over the bar at close range shortly after failing to connect a fine pass from Kagere.
Sony goalkeeper Owiny came to the aid of the sugar millers again at the close of the first half when he snatched Kagere's fine tap in from Ali Abondo.
The on form goalkeeper also snatched away another header from Kagere in the 44th minute.
Gor's current stars Ali Abondo, Enoch Agwanda and fitness trainer Tom Ogweno started their career at Sony Sugar.
