Manchester United have denied claims they have made a £70million bid for Thomas Muller, writes David McDonnell in San Francisco.

Reports from Germany claimed United had submitted the bid for the Bayern Munich and Germany forward.

But senior United sources have dismissed the link with Muller, despite Louis van Gaal's admiration for the player.

United have already raided Bayern for £15m signing Bastian Schweinsteiger this summer, and chairman Karl Heinz Rummennigge is under pressure not to lose any more big names.

Old Trafford boss Van Gaal a huge fan of World Cup winner Muller, 25, having worked with him during his time in charge of Bayern.

United are looking to add another striker before the September 1 transfer deadline, having sold Robin van Persie and not taken up the option to sign Radamel Falcao on a permanent deal.
