Gor Mahia won their first silverware of the season on Wednesday after stopping Sofapaka 2-1 in this year's DSTV Super Cup match at Nyayo Stadium.
The match went on despite warning by Football Kenya Federation (FKF) to stop the fixture.
Former Tusker midfielder Ali Abondo put up a man of the match performance with two goals that left him delighted after returning to his former club.
"It is always encouraging to play for a big club and personally this is the feeling I have at this time. This was a good way to start the season by winning a trophy early," said Abondo after the fixture.
The former Tusker man scored his first goal in the 25th minute after he had been put through by danger-man Godfrey Walusimbi.
The second goal came ten minutes later through a penalty. The penalty was awarded after Sofapaka goalkeeper David Okello was brought down by Michael Olunga inside his box.
Sofapaka were lucky to pull one back in injury time when Gor Mahia second half substitute Innocent Wafula scored into his own net while trying to clear a danger.
But Sofapaka should have scored earlier in the 80th minute when Boniface Oluoch in Gor Mahia's goal denied Fiston Rizak from a long range effort.
Gor Mahia coach Frank Nuttal praised his boys for a good performance coming ahead of their weekend match against CNAPS of Madagascar in the champions league.
"As always, the boys were able to raise their game. We performed better than we did in pre-season and showed that the boys are always able to raise their game when it matters," he said.
Sofapaka coach Sam Timbe was a disappointed man after the match and he blamed 'outside pressure' for the performance.
"It was a disappointing show and we have a lot to work on going into the next game. Some of our players just did not click," he said.
