DSTV Super Cup still on despite Football Kenya Federation warning

Organizers of the highly billed Kenya Premier League curtain raiser DSTV Super Cup scheduled to take place on Wednesday 11th February 2015 are confident the match will take place despite a stern admonition from Football Kenya Federation warning of dire consequences to any party or parties involved in the planning and execution.

The clubs in contest in the late Wednesday clash is league champions Gor Mahia and GOtv winners Sofapaka; both having openly declared their inclination to the KPL in the ongoing tussle between the two football organs.

In a strongly worded communiqué, signed Tuesday evening, the federation maintains that the match remains unsanctioned by the federation and that any referee officiating such a match risks deregistration. In anticipating use of suspended referees by the KPL in this match, the federation is sounding alarm bells to the clubs involved telling them the move may attract ‘heavy sanctions and penalties.’

But reacting to the letter, KPL’s head of technical committee Retired Referee GMT Ottieno rubbished the letter as mere threats. “Welcome to Nyayo Stadium for the DSTV Super Cup. It shall be played.”

The visibly confident GMT poured cold water to FKF’s letter as inconsequential “The same FKF said they do not recognize KPL just a week ago. Why then do they meddle in matches organized by a body they don’t recognize?”

With reports of a meeting called by the high powers that be for Wednesday morning to try and quell the wrangles in the football frontiers, observers are waiting to see the unfolding as time passes by.
