(The Mirror) Despite seeing his Manchester United denied victory in Tuesday's first leg of a Champions League quarter-final when Bastian Schweinsteiger cancelled out Nemanja Vidic’s opener, Moyes was defiant about his side’s chances in the return leg.

The Reds' boss said of the 1-1 draw: “I think we’ve given ourselves a great opportunity to go to Munich and get a victory.

“I believe they had a fight on their hands before the first leg. Tonight shows that we’ll be there. We’ll go toe to toe with them and try and come out on top.

“I always felt we could score against them and we’ll go to Munich believing we can score a goal.

“It’s a tough game, but our best football has come in this competition and we need to show our best football when we go to Munich next week.”

Danny Welbeck missed a great chance in the first half for United and Moyes says they must be more clinical next week.

“It was a good chance, but it was very good goalkeeping too,” he said. “You do need to be clinical. You don’t get many chances at this level, so when you get them, you have to take them.”

Moyes defended Antonio Valencia over claims he should have been sent off for lunging at Jerome Boateng and insisted Bayern goal-scorer Bastian Schweinsteiger was deservedly dismissed late on for fouling Wayne Rooney.

Schweinsteiger will now be suspended for next week's second leg, along with team-mate Javi Martinez, and Moyes said: “The boy tackles the ball into Antonio Valencia. I think if anything, it’s just Antonio’s follow-through. It wasn’t given.

“I think Schweinsteiger trips Wayne up. It’s a booking or if not, at least a foul.”

Bayern boss Pep Guardiola was unhappy with referee Carlos Carballo for showing Schweinsteiger his second yellow card, but stopped short of accusing Rooney of diving.

“I spoke to the referee and he knows my opinion and he gave me his opinion,” he said. “If you’re going to win the Champions League, you have to overcome everything and sometimes during this season and in this competition, that’s been the case.

“But I am happy with the performance and the result. We controlled the game and scored an away goal.”
