The 22-year-old Ghanian international will fly to Germany from the Blues’ pre-season tour of the United States tomorrow after boss Antonio Conte decided he was surplus to requirements this season.
Rahman only arrived at Stamford Bridge last summer in a £14million deal from Augsburg, but failed to make an impression as Chelsea struggled.
Conte believes a return to Germany will help kick-start his career. Rahman will join Schalke for the season.
He was on the bench when Chelsea played Real Madrid in Ann Arbour today but arrangements have been made to fly him to Germany.
