Roman Reigns beat Triple H in one of few expected results on a night of surprises at WrestleMania 32 in Texas

Roman Reigns is the new WWE world champion after defeating Triple H in one of the few expected results at a WrestleMania full of surprises.

This was a night characterised by shocking moments, none more so than Shane McMahon's death defying leap off the top of Hell in a Cell in a loss to The Undertaker.

Then there was the unexpected return of John Cena to save The Rock from the Wyatt Family and the glorious nostalgia trip of 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin, Shawn Michaels and Mick Foley helping The New Day gain revenge on The League of Nations.

WWE Divas Champion Charlotte was crowned the first holder of the newly unveiled WWE Women's Championship, NBA legend Shaquille O'Neal entered a battle royal, and Zack Ryder stunned the world by winning the WWE Intercontinental Championship.

But the main event panned out exactly as many fans feared, with the unpopular Roman Reigns - marked out by WWE as their next big star - triumphing over 14-time world champion Triple H.

Stephanie McMahon did all she could to ensure her husband and the co-leader of The Authority remained in power by repeatedly distracting the referee.

However, she earned a huge spear from the challenger for her efforts, and resorted to trying to hand The Game his patented sledgehammer as HHH looked for a tainted victory.

Throughout the match, the more than 100,000 fans reportedly in attendance - a WrestleMania record - booed Reigns' every move and cheered when Triple H landed blows.

Yet following not one but two Superman Punches, Roman had the Cerebral Assassin rocking, and he then vanquished him with the same move with which he dispatched his wife.

The moment of the night was unquestionably Shane McMahon's insane jump from some 20ft, which sent him crashing through an announce table when The Undertaker rolled out of the way.

The pair were scrapping with the future of Raw on the line, as Shane O'Mac looked to wrest control from his father Vince, and Taker to prevent Mr McMahon banning him from future WrestleManias if he lost.

Shane, performing in front of his three sons, would just not lie down, managing to kick out after a Last Ride and a chokeslam on steel steps and escaping Hell's Gate submission.

He went Coast to Coast to kick a trash can into Undertaker's gut and attacked him with a TV monitor, before pointing upwards at the demonic steel structure.

Fans across the globe held their breath as the daredevil clambered up and then came swiftly down, stirring just long enough for The Phenom to end his resistance with his famous tombstone piledriver.

The unfancied Zack Ryder - considered by many to be an odd addition to the ladder match for the WWE Intercontinental Championship - triumphed in one of the biggest upsets in WrestleMania history.

All the focus was on previous champion Kevin Owen's bitter rivalry with Sami Zayn, and the likes of Dolph Ziggler, Stardust and Sin Cara, providing a chaotic match full of crazy spots and intense drama.

But after a great diving elbow off the top of a ladder, the 10-year veteran followed it up later on by pushing smug The Miz down, and grabbing the title swinging high from above.

The New Day entered the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas dropping out of a giant box of their Booty O's cereal, wearing Dragon Ball Z inspired costumes.

As WWE World Tag Team Champions, they too were expected to emerge as winners, yet England's Wade Barrett and Ireland's Sheamus had other ideas, and combined to knock out Xavier Woods.

Just when The League of Nations started to gloat, WWE Hall of Famers Shawn Michaels, Mick Foley, and finally Texas own 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin hit the ring and ran through their famous finishing moves.

Foley aka Mankind caught Sheamus with Mr Socko and the mandible claw, HBK nailed Alberto Del Rio with Sweet Chin Music, and Auston hit epic stunners on Rusev and Barrett, before giving Woods one during a subsequent dance off and sinking some beers.
