Football: Nyakweri lift Orem Jerry Cup in Nyatike

Nyakweri FC are the winners of the Orem Jerry Memorial Cup.

Nyakweri beat Kuja FC 6-5 on post-match penalties after a 2-2 tie in regulation time in the finals played in Agenga, Nyatike Sub County, on Saturday.

Nyakweri qualified for the finals after beating Ageng’a, Tausi and Nyatuoro to top Pool A with nine points.

The champions made good use of their top strikers, Ogutu Panga and Collins Tukiko, who proved to be a thorn in the flesh of their opponents during the tournament that was revived by local leaders.

In Pool B, Kuja FC beat Ongenya FC 1-0 in the semi-finals to advance. Pool B had Kuja, Pom, Ongenya and Bad Boys. Pom, Bad Boys, Ageng’a and Tausi were sent packing in the preliminaries.

The Orem Jerry Memorial Tournament was started in 1985, after the death of the area councilor Orem Jerry.

Presenting the awards, area Ward Representative Boaz Okoth said the tournament is set for major improvement. Okoth promised to ask area Governor Okoth Obado for more help in subsequent events.

“This is a serious event. We want to nurture talent and ensure we produce the best football players in the region,”  said Okoth.

Winners Nyakweri were given uniforms, footballs and Sh7,000 while the runners-up took home uniforms and Sh1,000.

The event sponsor, Adendi Orem, advised players to remain disciplined and diligent to reap from their talents.

During the week-long tournament, locals were treated to splendid football displays on the Ageng’a Market pitch.

Raphael Kangetta, the event chairman, said he would ensure that the event was expanded to accommodate more teams and games.
