Teams set for Charity Cup tourney ahead of KPL kick off

The new Kenyan Premier League (KPL) season may be three weeks away but Saturday’s Charity Cup tournament may as well kick off the 2013 calendar.

Four teams, Gor Mahia, Sofapaka, Western Stima and Mathare United will take part in the one-day tournament whose proceeds will go towards supporting various charity activities.  

For Mathare United coach Stanley Okumbi, the tournament could not have come at a better time, pointing out he wants to use it as part of rebuilding his side ahead of the new season.

United lost a record 22 players in the just-concluded season, something that has forced the tactician to start rebuilding a new team.

“This tournament is very important for us because we will have a chance to see our new signings and also identify exactly where we are before the new season starts,” said Okumbi.

Dealt big blow

He admitted the club was dealt a big blow following the departure of their key players but remained confident they will be able to rebuild a competitive side.

Okumbi said he looks forward to their first match against Gor Mahia which kicks off at 9am and hopes his new signings will not disappoint.

“Playing Gor is always exciting and this will be no different. We have a new team and hope we can stop them come Saturday,” said Okumbi.

Gor Mahia coach Zradvko  Logarusic, while pointing out that the tournament  provides a great opportunity to begin the season, expressed concern over the congested fixture.

Logarusic said it is not feasible for a professional side to play two significant matches on a single day and suggested that they be allowed to field two teams.

Avoid injuries

“We are keen to avoid any injuries ahead of the new season but the Charity Cup fixtures, as they are, may lead to injuries as we are forced to play two matches in a single day. It is even draining on the players,” said Logarusic.

Gor Mahia will take on Mathare United in the opening match of the Charity Cup from 9am at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani. They will then play another match either in the final or the play-offs depending on who wins between them and United. The second match, which kicks off at 11am, will pit Sofapaka against Western Stima.

The one day tournament is being used to raise funds for charity and the winner will pocket Sh850,000. Teams were selected after fans voted through Short Message Services.

Logarusic at the same time said he was satisfied with his side’s performance against Sony Sugar in Saturday’s friendly which they won 1-0.
