Happy Sunday! In the spirit of Ramadan, today we make Umm Ali, a traditional Egyptian national dessert made out of leftover bread. The roots of this dish can be traced back to around the 12th century in Egypt.

You can use any type of bread, croissants included.

Ingredients:

250g leftover bread

300ml sweet condensed milk

200ml heavy cream

1 litre milk

1 cup walnuts

1 cup raisins

1 tbsp. cinnamon

2 tbsp. desiccated coconut

Method:

In a deep pot on medium-high heat, boil the milk, sweet condensed milk and heavy cream. Once boiled remove the mixture from the heat and set it aside to cool down.

Now cut the bread into small chunky pieces and put it into a casserole. Sprinkle the cinnamon and desiccated coconut on top, then add the walnuts, raisins and milk.

Bake at 180C for 20 minutes. Have your Umma Ali warm on its own or with some vanilla ice cream. Enjoy!
