Man beaten by crowd after trying to jump into ocean over cheating wife

A man in Nigeria was beaten and scolded by residents after he reportedly tried to jump into the Atlantic Ocean in an apparent suicide attempt.

In a viral video seen by TNX Africa, the man is seen crying after discovering his wife was having an affair during a video call.

The incident reportedly occurred at night, at a Lagos waterfront.

People in the video could be seen slapping him while questioning why he had chosen to end his life.

The man periodically glanced at his phone, suggesting he was still on the call with his wife.

“Because of woman, you want to kill yourself. Wetin be your wife,” a man could be heard saying in Pidgin.

Another bystander tried to calm him, urging the tearful man, who was dressed in a colourful beach shirt and orange shorts, to settle down.

“Can you calm down now?” he said.

At the end of the 50-second clip, a man wearing a black t-shirt and white combat trousers escorts the crying man away, holding him by the waist.

The footage sparked varied reactions on social media. Some criticised the mob’s harshness and called for mental health support.

Marife wrote on X, “Committing suicide over a cheating wife is just a double win for the cheater.”

Another user, Gozie, added, “Save first, Support next, no one deserves mockery in their lowest moment.”

Ezekiel Oluwada commented, “This is one of the issues we been facing in society. In the olden days, men were brought up to be strong-minded, so if things like this happened, they knew how to handle it without showing emotion. Yes, it’s not easy being in this situation, which is why men should teach their male children to be emotionally strong. How they handle it matters. I pray he comes over it.”

Miss Brie wrote, “Women deal with cheating husbands all the time, and it’s messed up what betrayal can do to a person. He needs to man up, just move on and divorce her, simple.”
