Black Panther star Connie Chiume dead at 72

Renowned South African actress, Connie Chiume, known for her roles in various TV shows and films, passed away at 72.

Her family announced her death in a statement, saying she died at the Garden City hospital in Johannesburg on Tuesday afternoon.

"The Chiume family regrets to inform you of the passing of the internationally acclaimed award-winning actress Connie Chiume," read part of the statement.

Chiume, who trained as a teacher before becoming a well-known figure on television, starred in popular South African series such as Rhythm City, Zone 14, and Gomora.

She gained widespread recognition in 1989 with her role in the television series Inkom' Edla Yodwa.

Internationally, she was celebrated for her role as Zawavari in the 2018 Marvel film Black Panther and its 2022 sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, where she took on the role of Wakanda's Elder Statesman.

She also appeared in Beyonce's Disney musical film The Lion King, playing the role of Simba's mother, Sarabi.

In addition to her on-screen work, Chiume was honoured with numerous awards. In 2000, she received an NTVA Avanti Award for Best Actress in a Drama Series for her role in Soul City.

In 2009, she won a South African Film and Television Award (SAFTA) for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama for her performance as Stella Moloi in Zone 14.

Her most recent work included a role in the film Heart of the Hunter, released earlier this year, and the TV series Soon Comes Night.

Chiume leaves behind four children-two sons and two daughters. The family expressed their grief and asked for privacy during this difficult time.

South Africa's public broadcaster, SABC News, described her as a "beacon of hope" in their tribute to her.
