Tanzanian singer Zuchu has apologized after her recent live performance drew criticism and led to her suspension from performing for six months.

In her apology video on Instagram, Zuchu stated in Swahili, "Habari watanzania, kwa majina naitwa Zuchu. Kupitia Baraza la Sanaa la Tanzania Basata, nianze kwa kuwashukuru walezi wetu kwa kuniita na kufanya kikao na mimi cha kunipa maelekezo na muongozo sahihi."

The Zanzibar Arts, Census, Film, and Cultural Council (BASSFU) took action against her following her show at the Fullmoon Kendwa Night on February 24, 2024, citing the performance as unsuitable according to the cultural standards of Zanzibar.

Zuchu expressed regret for any part of her performance that may have offended the public, saying, "Niombe radhi kwa jamii kama kuna mtu yeyote ama mlengo yeyote nimemkera. Lengo lilikua kukuburudisha na sio kupotosha maana."

Further investigations by BASSFU revealed that Zuchu was not registered with the organization and did not possess the necessary permits to perform in Zanzibar.

Consequently, she was fined 1 million Tanzanian shillings and was required to submit a written apology and guarantee compliance with cultural norms in her future performances.

Zuchu's record label, WCB, also apologized on their official Instagram page, clarifying that her actions were intended for entertainment purposes and not meant to disrespect anyone.

The National Arts Council (Basata) shared a photo on their official page of Zuchu receiving a copy of 'The Mwongozo wa Kazi za Sanaa' (The Code of Ethics in the Arts) during her visit to the council, showing her commitment to respecting the ethical guidelines for artists in Tanzania.

In her apology, Zuchu also addressed Basata, saying, "Niombe radhi tena kwa walezi wangu wa Baraza la Sanaa Basata. Wao wamekua mchango mkubwa kwa kutuelekeza kutokikiuka maadili yetu."

Zuchu further thanked Basata for the meeting and for listening to her side of the story, "Nashukuru kwa kikao kilicho fanyika, kwanza na kunipa sikio la kujielezea na kujitetea."
