Asumbi top girls' school in Nyanza

Asumbi Girls School in Homa Bay County maintained its position as the leading girls’ school in Nyanza, even as most female candidates failed to catch up their male counterparts in this year's Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination.
Asumbi, the home to Eric Ademba, who was early this year declared the best Mathematics teacher in Africa by the African Union, was ranked seventh best in Nyanza, in a list dominated by boy schools. It had a mean score of 8.58.
Out of Asumbi's 405 candidates, two got A, while 39 had A-.
Girls' performance
Asumbi was closely followed by Kisii County's St Charles Lwanga Ichuni Girls, which posted a mean of 7.65, Nyabururu Girls with a mean of 7.51, and Kisumu Girls with 7.2. Ng'iya Girls from Siaya had 7.05.
However, little-known schools in the region also made it to the top 10, with Pope Benedict Seminary and Kiage – Tumaini, both in Kisii County, emerging third and sixth overall in the region, with 8.90 and 8.60 mean score respectively.
Sega Township Secondary School also upset the region's giants, emerging as one of the top institutions in Siaya County with a mean score of 6.48.
Agoro Sare Boys was the best in this year’s KCSE examination in Homa Bay County.
The school located in Rachuonyo South Sub-county scored a mean score of 8.843. This is an improvement from last year’s KCSE, in which it had a mean score of 8.6 points.
It was followed by Mbita Boys National School, with a mean score of 8.4 points. The school had up to 303 candidates obtaining grades for direct entry to university.
Principal Kennedy Ojijo attributed the success to early completion of the syllabus.
Region's giants
In Nyamira, St Peter's Nyakemincha Mixed Secondary continued with its improved performance as it seeks to topple the region's giants.
Yesterday's records indicated that the school posted an improved performance in this year's KCSE with a mean of 7.8, behind Nyambaria School, which scored a mean of 8.01.
Nyambaria improved from last year's KCSE score of 6.8.
Orero Boys had a mean of 7.9 points. One candidate scored A, 19 had A-, 35 B+, 47 B, 60 B-, 58 C+, 50 C, 10 C- and 4 D+.
Homa Bay High School had a mean of 7.7 points. The school had 30 candidates with A-. [Dennis Onyango, James Omoro and Stanley Ongwae]
