Weeks after an attack that claimed the lives of 11 people in Lamu's Juhudi and Salama villages, the villagers are still fleeing their homes. This exodus is induced by fears of fresh attacks from bandits out of the Boni forest where Al Shabaab are said to hide.

In itself, this says a lot about the reactionary nature of our security officers who, rather than forestall attacks, turn up after the attacks.

Clearly, this inspires very little confidence in the government's ability to protect its citizens in known volatile areas.

The Cabinet Secretary of Internal Security has promised citizens of Lamu enhanced security, but there is nothing to show for it as citizens feel exposed and flee their homes to stay safe.

The government should act decisively to stop attacks and stop gambling with the safety of citizens.
