Makueni CECs warned against wastage of public funds

Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jnr has urged county executive committee members (CECs) to be prudent in public spending to save more resources for development.

Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony of the CECs at his office on Tuesday, Mutula said his government will not tolerate wasteful spending inform of 'unnecessary' conferences and payment of unaccountable Daily Subsistence Allowances.

"I have seen a circular from the national government about the lean coffers it is running. If there is no money at the national level, do you think there will be any at the county?" He posed.

The county boss said the sure way to win public confidence is through focus and attending to the needs of the people.

He urged the county staff to join hands with the CEC's to deliver to the people saying his priority is to tackle drought which his brought untold suffering to the people.

"Forget about those conferences in big hotels. The many claims on allowances, just forget, because we have to deliver medicine, water and better services to the people of Makueni," said Mutula.

"To the county staff, you must recommit yourselves to the devolution dream. We have to move fast so that we make use of the little resources we have," he added.

The governor said that his first term in office will largely be built around service to residents as opposed to re-election politics.

Deputy Governor Lucy Mulili urged the CECs to build good working teams in their respective dockets and put public resources to good use.

Ms Mulili also asked the county executives to familiarise themselves with county policies, saying that the devolved unit will be rated based on tangible development projects to the people.

"You must acquaint yourselves with the county policies that have been in place, take time and go through them because you might find yourself serving in a different department," she said.

The deputy governor urged the CECs to ensure accountability as they implement the governor's manifesto.

Mutula appointed former Office of the Senate Minority Leader liaison officer Nicholas Nzioka as CEC Gender and Social Services, former Kenya Medical and Supplies Authority (Kemsa) assistant ICT Manager Elizabeth Muli (Education and ICT), lecturer and Head of Department of Hydrology and Aquatic Sciences, South Eastern Kenya University Sonia Nzilani (Lands, Urban Planning and Environment).

Others are Peter Nyamai (Trade and Tourism), Sebastian Kyoni (Roads and Transport), John Kasyoki (Water and Sanitation), Japheth Mang'oka (Devolution), Damaris Kavoi (Finance), Dr Paul Musila (Health Services) and Joyce Mutua (Agriculture)

The event was attended by Devolution Principal Secretary nominee Terry Mbaika, Makueni Woman Representative Rose Museo and County Commissioner Beverly Opwora.
