The new county government of Machakos will partner with the national government on matters of education, governor Wavinya Ndeti has said.

The governor said one of her top priority development initiatives is education to reduce illiteracy in the county.

She said this through a speech read by her deputy Francis Mwangangi.

Mwangangi was officiating the opening of all primary schools' games in Kenya hosted at the Machakos teachers' college training playgrounds.

The games which involve all primary schools in the forty-seven counties playing football, netball and volleyball will take three days.

Mr Mwangangi said the county government would mobilize all stakeholders in the county to motivate pupils to venture into different sports activities.

"I will ensure all that we agreed with the teaching fraternity in the county has been accomplished accordingly, " added the governor.

Mr Mwangangi said less than four weeks the agenda will be achieved.

"The county government will also collaborate with the ministry of education to fight and minimise unwanted pregnancies among school-going children, "he added.

Mr Mwangangi cited the years 2020/2021 as the unfortunate phenomenon that befell Machakos county where four thousand pregnancies were reported among pupils at home saying such an incident should never be allowed to happen again.

Consequently, Mwangangi urged the teaching fraternity to empower and motivate more pupils to venture into different sporting activities to exploit their talents.

"Today sports have made many in the world heroes and millionaires out of their talents," said the deputy governor, adding that Kenya should be placed in the same picture as well.
