A woman and her son were yesterday arrested after police exhumed human remains suspected to be those of a man who went missing five years ago in Iani village, Mukaa, in Makueni County.

A neighbour, Ndinda Kyalo, allegedly overheard a conversation between two family members implicating the son of killing Michael Mwendwa and burying him in a shallow pit latrine.

Ms Kyalo repeated what she had heard to officers at Salama Police Station.

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) arrested the two suspects who led them to the body.

"The DCI is probing the circumstances under which the murder happened. At the scene, we had experts during the body's exhumation, which is now bones that will be subjected to further analysis. We will investigate to ascertain exactly why they had to kill him. So far, we have the two suspects in our custody," said Mukaa police commander Jacinta Mwirania.

Mwendwa's father, Michael Ndiku, said they had been tormented after the son went missing.

He revealed that Mwendwa and the suspect used to work together in construction.
