On June 12, Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) launched the 'UpdateToken Meter Yako' initiative to upgrade the software on all prepaid token meters. The company hopes to update about 7.4 million prepaid meters at no cost.

Joseph Siror, the managing director of KPLC emphasised that the updating process is free and advised caution against con artists demanding money for the service.

When an update is planned for a customer's meter, Kenya Power will notify them via SMS, directing them to buy tokens in order to obtain the codes required for the update process.

Why token meters are being updated

The process ensures that the units are safe by preventing replication in the system and if you haven't updated your meter by the deadline it will not work.

Update Token Meter Yako is necessary to prevent service disruptions.

What to do before updating the meter token

Before entering the codes, make sure to use up all old unused electricity tokens. If you do not, you will be unable to use them after entering the meter update codes.

How to update your meter

  • Once your token meter is scheduled for an update, Kenya Power will send you an SMS to alert you and request that you purchase tokens of any amount to receive the two codes.
  • After the purchase, you will receive two codes a Reset Code, an Update Code, and the purchased tokens.
  • After receiving the codes, the users must key in the codes into their token meters before loading the purchased tokens.
  • Key in the first 20-digit code (Reset Code) into your token meter.
  • Key in the second 20-digit code (Update Code) to update your meter.
  • After successfully updating your meter, load the newly purchased tokens.

What if your token is rejected?

For the following reasons a meter may reject a token:

  • The meter had already generated Key Code Tokens, but they were not typed in, and the consumer completed a second purchase.
  • The Key Code Tokens (KCTs) have not been keyed in consecutively as required.
  • This could be that reset codes and update codes were already produced hence the meter cannot accept the tokens unless the meter is Updated with the reset codes and update codes
  • A frequent error is entering the wrong token number digits.
