The Ministry of Interior says eight people have so far been killed by floods in Tana River County since the rains started in November 2023.

Additionally, over 38,390 households have been displaced while crops and livestock worth Sh65 million destroyed.

"Approximately 38,360 households (191,800 individuals) were displaced, with 8 tragic fatalities. Key infrastructure including roads, bridges, and schools were extensively damaged. Around 13,315 acres of crops were destroyed, and 1,190 livestock were lost, valued at Sh.65,137,000."

Speaking during the El Nino post-assessment process in Tana River, Interior PS Raymond Omollo said that 715.7 metric tonnes of food and 7 metric tonnes of medical supplies have already been distributed in the county.

Additionally, plans to rebuild homes and rehabilitate infrastructure including the Madogo junction, are underway even as strategies are being developed to mitigate future flood risks.

The National Government Administration Officers (NGAOs) on the other hand have been tasked with gathering immediate relief requirements for the 19 secondary schools in the County in light of schools reopening.

According to Omollo, the government is committed to the welfare of residents affected by the El Nino floods and will continue to collaborate with the Counties, international organizations, and local communities in ensuring an effective disaster management and recovery process.
