Former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga's family begs for his release

The family of former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga is appealing to the government to release their kin.

Njenga was allegedly arrested on Saturday, September 17 evening in the Banana area, Kiambu County.

According to Njenga's father, Njoroge Kamunya, his son notified him of his arrest minutes after he was arrested by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) alongside his personal aide Felix Lekishe.

However, when the family got to the DCI Headquarters on Kiambu Road, they were told he was not on the premises.

"His phone went off since the time he talked to us and we don't know where to get him," said Bishop Mwangi, a close friend of his father.

This is not the first time that Njenga has been arrested from his residence.

Last month police conducted a series of raids on his residences in Nyahururu, Nakuru, Laikipia, and Nairobi.

"Whoever is authorizing these arrests to be done is spoiling the government of President William Ruto and tainting its image," echoed the father.

"Arresting Njenga is in bad light because he has a mention of his case alongside Lekishe and his elder brother Peter Njoroge,"

Njenga was also arrested and charged at the court in relation to planning the anti-government demonstrations called by the Azimio party over the high cost of living in the country.
