Police in Homabay County have launched an investigation into an incident that saw two fishermen drown to death on Thursday, September 7.

The two, whose bodies are yet to be found are said to have been hit by a ship sailing to Uganda from Kisumu on Wednesday, September 6.

Homabay County Commissioner Moses Lilan, says that the investigation is currently ongoing and police officers are working with local fishermen to find their bodies.

"We are aware of the incident and we are pursuing it. The necessary action will be taken upon completion of the investigations," Lilan said.

According to Remba Beach Management Unit chairman Semekia Mamra, the ship lacked lights making it hard for the fishermen to notice its incoming.

"Neither the ship captain nor boat coxswain could notice each other from a distance due to darkness. We suspect this is one of the reasons why the accident occurred. Additionally, the ship did not stop after the incident. Instead, it sailed to its destination Uganda," Mamra added.

This is not the first time a similar incident has been witnessed in that region therefore fishermen are advised to be careful, especially at night.
