Traders in Nanyuki are set to benefit from an ultra-modern market aimed at creating a conducive business environment.

Housing and Urban Planning PS Charles Hinga while on an inspection tour of Nanyuki Town Open Air Market on Saturday, February 18, 2023 said the government was committed to improving traders' business environment in the area.

"Majority of Kenyans are traders by nature and what they look for is the dignity of their hustles and the places they trade from, but most of them trade in filthy places, where there is no road, sewerage and other amenities, hence attracting people with low purchasing power," said Hinga.

The PS was accompanied by Laikipia Governor Joshua Irungu and Laikipia East MP Mwangi Kiunjuri.

He said his office had dispatched a team of engineers in the county to design the proposed two-story market in Nanyuki town.

He said a similar project would soon extend to all 47 counties with a plan to modernize about 400 markets across the country.

He allayed fears the construction of the market would affect traders in the area.

"The Government in partnership with the County Government will make arrangements for the traders to move to a different site to pave way for the construction of the modern market," he said.

Governor Irungu exuded optimism that the new market would foster business growth.

"I look forward to the partnership with the government to make affordable housing a reality. Laikipia has the potential to decongest other neighbouring counties through the affordable housing program,"said Irungu.
