World Marathon record holder Eliud Kipchoge and Brigid Kosgei this morning both emerged victorious in the Tokyo Marathon, breaking course record along the way.

Kipchoge won the men’s race in 2 hours 2 minutes and 40 seconds breaking the previous record set in countryman Wilson Kipsang (2:03:58) in 2017.

“I am so proud to win in the streets of Tokyo, where the people have running in their heart and minds. It’s great to now have won 4 out of the 6 Abbott World Marathon Major races. Finally, I want to say I want this world to unite. My win today is to bring positivity in this world,” said Kipchoge on Twitter.

Kipchoge has set himself a target of winning each of the six Abbott World Marathon Majors.

After four wins in London, three in Berlin victories and one in Chicago, he has now added Tokyo to the list.

World marathon bronze medalist Amos Kipruto finished second in a personal best time of 2:03:13, while Ethiopia’s Tamirat Tola clocked 2:04:14 in third.

In the women's race, Kosgei crossed the finish line in 2 hours 16 minutes and 2 seconds, eclipsing Israel’s Lonah Chemtai Salpeter's record (2:17:45).

Ethiopians Ashete Bekere and Gotytom Gebreslase finished second and third respectively in 2:17:58 and 2:18:18.
