Kipchoge stands to pocket Sh25m
World’s fastest marathoner reaping fruits of his labour.
After claiming the greatest marathon runner of modern era status on Sunday, the newly minted World Marathon Record holder Eliud Kipchoge stands to pocket at least Sh25 million as winning bonuses.
Apart from Sh10m from race organisers, which includes winner’s prize of Sh4,698,027.25 and Sh5,872,534.07 for the World record, Kipchoge, 33, will also receive a contractual bonus from American company, Nike.
According to our sources, the least amount an athlete gets from the giant sporting apparel after winning a big race is Sh5m and Sh10m for breaking a world record.
Considering Kipchoge is an established athlete, he will definitely pocket more than the Sh5m paid to other runners.
Kipchoge, who is also the Isuzu East Africa (Isuzu EA) ambassador, will be rewarded with a new 2016 Luxury version of Isuzu D-Max valued at Sh5.9m by the company.
“We as Isuzu EA are delighted with Eliud’s award-winning performance, and are going to reward him with an Isuzu Luxury Double Cab Pick-Up,” said the company’s Communication Manager, Duncan Muhindi.
“Being our ambassador, we promised to reward him with the car, if he breaks the world record. The vehicle is valued at Sh5.9 million.”
Meanwhile, Eldoret, popularly known as City of Champions, Iten, christened Home of Champions and Nandi, better referred to as Source of Champions, all went into a frenzy following Kipchoge’s sterling show.
Also, they were overly delighted with Gladys Cherono’s course record in the German city of Berlin on Sunday.
In Eldoret, athletics fans, led by Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago, flooded the Oginga Odinga Street to follow as Kipchoge re-wrote history.
There were huge traffic snarl ups on the otherwise busy streets on Eldoret, while in Iten, athletics enthusiasts converged at the Kellu Resort, a facility owned by former World Marathon Record-holder Wilson Kipsang, who finished third in the Berlin race.
Kipchoge’s crowning moments went as scripted as Kenyans strengthened their grip on the world record since Patrick Makau bettered Ethiopian Haile Gebreselassie’s time in 2011.
Makau’s winning time was 2:03:38 against Gebreselassie’s 2:03:59 in 2008.
Wilson Kipsang broke it two years later with a new time of 2:03:23, before another Kenyan, Dennis Kimetto, dipped 2:02:57 in 2014.
Kimetto twitted: “Congratulations @EliudKipchoge with the new WR! Fantastic run, you’re an example for each and every runner on this world. Pongezi sana.”
