It was a culture shock for many Kenyan athletes here who confirmed what has generally been a bad rumour back home that monkey meat is a delicacy among the Congolese.

On their way from Massamba Debat Indoor Court where Kenya thrashed Nigeria in straight sets on Tuesday, Kenyan contingent watched in shock as locals were scrambling for barbecued monkey meat along the road near Talangai Arrondisement.

Also being sold alongside monkey ‘choma’ were huge fish from the Congo River, but the locals seemed to prefer monkey meat to fish.
