Strathmore hit Moi University in KUSA games opener

KENYA: Moi University, which is the host of the Kenya Universities Sports Association (Kusa) games started on a losing note on the first day of the higher-learning championships on Thursday.

The host football teams –– both men and women lost in the opening games in the ties played at the main campus grounds.

Women team were beaten by Mount Kenya University (MKU) 3-0 in  while their men counterparts went down by a solitary goal to Strathmore University.

MKU women opened the  score through Linnet Achieng on third minute after receiving a clean pass from Gladys Wangeci.

Then Beatrice Odhiambo netted the second goal on 11th minute from a direct free-kick after Moi’s goalkeeper handled the ball outside her jurisdiction.

Emma Gladys sealed the win for the visitors some minutes before the break.

Gladys received a good pass from Odhiambo. The victory was a good course for coach Ramadhan Chandago who said it was welcoming for his side to record a win against the home team.

“It was a good start for us because we were  playing a team that enjoys good support from their fans within the institution.

“The team really maintained focus from the start of the encounter,” said coach FeverPitch after match played for 60 minutes.

Police roadblock

In the second half, Moi struggled to gain ground and reduce the goal difference but MKU’s defence remained firm that played their ball from the  centre towards their opponents side.

Experienced MKU pushed for the goals till the last whistle making them top the pool A with three points.

Men’s team,  on their part lost by a goal to Strathmore. Isaiah Ogumbo netted the lone in the 16th minute after  converting a corner kick.

In another encounter, Pwani University defeated Kakamega’s Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology by a goal.

Victor Odhiambo scored the only goal from a penalty kick after the  ball was handled in the 18-yard box.

Other games went on yesterday on the second day of the competition.

Delays were occasioned following the delayed buses at police road blocks.

Some players were forced to make it on foot from Cheptiret trading centre to Moi University where the events were taking place.

Football and volleyball will be played at Moi University, athletics track and field event and Karate at University of Eldoret (UOE), hockey at UOE and Moi main campus, basketball (West campus), Rugby and Tennis at Moi Annex and Eldoret Sports Club
