Two girls drowned at the weekend while swimming in a pool of water on an abandoned construction site in Thika.

The girls aged 12, and in class six and seven drowned at Abuduba estate near KDF Thika barracks, Saturday at 3pm.

“I tried to caution them not to go inside the water but they were adamant. They entered the pool and immediately I saw one of my friends raising her hand as she called for help. Since I could not be able to assist them, I rushed back home to ask for help,” said a friend to the two.

Mildred Nyaboke mother to one of the dead girl said she rushed to the pool only to find clothes and shoes of her daughter beside it.

“I reported to Makongeni police, my daughter was retrieved dead,” she said. “This is the most painful and worst news that I have ever received just days to Christmas.”

The bodies of the girls were retrieved at 9pm on Saturday by KDF disaster response unit assisted by divers from Ruiru.

Drowned in quarry

Thika West OCPD Paul Karobia said the place where the girlsdrowned had been abandoned for some time.

Last week, Sergeant James Meme Kobia, 38, from Thika barracks and his sons Joseph Kithinji, 11, and Vincent Muchui, seven, drowned in a quarry in the same area.
