Three people died on Sunday morning after the bus they were travelling in was involved in a head-on-collision with a lorry near Taru trading centre in Kwale County.

The bus, belonging to Mash East Africa was heading to Mombasa from Nairobi.

According to Coast Regional Traffic Commandant, George Kashmir, the lorry lost control and collided head-on with the bus that was driving in the opposite direction.

The deceased, all male, died on the spot while 22 who sustained serious injuries were rushed to Samburu County Hospital.

"The lorry left its lane and collided with the Mombasa bound bus at around 5.30 am. Some 18 passengers on the bus were injured and taken to Samburu health center. The bodies of the deceased persons (all male) were taken to Kinango Sub County District Hospital mortuary,'' said Kashmir.

According to an eyewitness, the number of those injured rose to 24 and four of them were children.

Out of the 24, three men had serious injuries and were rushed to the Coast General Hospital.

Mash East Africa Limited while condoling with the families confirmed that one of their buses, KCJ 386V, which had left Nairobi for Mombasa, was involved in an accident.

''Two of our clients died as a result of the accident, while several others suffered injuries. We wish all the injured a speedy recovery. We wish to convey our condolences messages to family and friends of the departed,'' read their statement.

Kashmir now urges drivers to be cautious while using the roads as most of the accidents are usually caused by reckless driving.

"We do not want to see each day our people dying on the roads, especially during these times of merry-making,'' said Kashmir.

Further, police officers have been deployed to ensure that road users remain safe during and after the festive season.

"We have started using speed guns and alcohol-blow detectors to check on overspending and drunken driving. Anyone found going against traffic rules will face the full force of the law,'' he said.
