The national government will provide high speed internet for visitors to the Mama Ngina Waterfront project.

ICT and Innovation Principal Secretary Jerome Ochieng' said the provision of high quality internet would boost security at the upgraded facility.

"We intend to provide a conducive technology infrastructure that will enhance communication and visitor experience through sharing of photos and videos while enjoying the beautiful sceneries of the Indian Ocean," said Mr Ochieng'.

The PS said that with high quality Internet connectivity, the project would provide an ideal platform for establishment of innovation hubs and cyber-cafes and also help youth to develop their talents.

Construction of the Sh460 million waterfront project is progressing on schedule with completion date set for July this year.

Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala recently gave a tour to the parliamentary Committee on Sports, Culture and Tourism with members giving the thumbs-up to progress of the ongoing works.

Mr Balala told the committee that the project, which is being implemented by the Ministry of Tourism and the Mombasa County Government, was going to be a "game changer" that will transform the tourism sector in the coastal city.

Balala, President Uhuru Kenyatta, ODM leader Raila Odinga and Governor Hassan Joho launched the project in January.

Balala said that once the project was completed, first priority would be given to traders who are currently operating on Mama Ngina Drive.

The project is expected to promote the city’s history, culture of the people and offer an ideal venue for festivals and other social events.

The seafront project comprises a public square, two iconic gateways, a Swahili Cultural Centre, amphitheatre, modern kiosks, restaurants and parking areas.
