Mathira residents held prayers at Karatina Market in Nyeri county Tuesday to seek divine intervention over Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua's impeachment hearing in the National Assembly.

Alex Githanju a pastor with the Holy Ministry said unforgiveness and corruption was derailing progress and development in the country.

"As a country and church we terribly failed when we opted to surrender our mission, vision and hope to the current political regime terming," he said.

John Kimiti a community health promoter claimed that Gachagua was a sacrificial lamb for the government's shortcomings.

"The government has messed up with almost all critical institutions and sectors and the impeachment is meant to divert attention and cover up of the truth behind the local and international financial cartels that only benefit few connected figures in this government," he said.

Security has been heightened in Nyeri, Othaya and Karatina towns, the backyard of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

A heavy contingent of anti-riot police has been deployed to Karatina town which recently witnessed demonstrations during Gen Z protests.

Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi's residence in the outskirts of Karatina Town, has remained under 24-hour police guard after he voted in support of the impeachment motion against Gachagua on Tuesday last week.
